Building a Dependable, Highly Available Network

For a Financial Services Provider

The Company

Our customer is a large European commercial bank offering personal, business and corporate financial services. The company has over 10,500 employees and serves millions of customers.

As a major financial services provider, the company processes millions of transactions daily, from social welfare payments to capital market trading. The volume and importance of these transactions make the company a significant part of the national economy it resides in. Their network is critical to delivering these vital services.

The Challenge

To enable the company to maintain the network performance level required to be competitive in their marketplace and to scale the volume of services they provide to their vast customer base, two strategic network projects were identified.

Enhance the Redundancy and Resilience of the Network

The customer had an incumbent network provider, but wanted to implement a dual-supplier strategy for physical network diversity, additional and specific network expertise, and to de-risk from over-reliance on a single supplier.

Upgrade the Core Infrastructure and Implement a Managed Service Layer

The mainframe infrastructure that underpinned the core network had become legacy. Newer hardware was available that would deliver new performance-improving features and efficiencies. Optimising the connectivity between network locations would also improve application performance.

The Solution

We integrated these two key projects into one private managed network solution, bespoke to the unique requirements of the customer. We call that Private Connect.

  • A private, high-speed DWDM connectivity solution providing 10G interfaces between IBM mainframes housed in separate data centres.

  • Over 65 Ethernet and Fibre services used for core mainframe, storage and IT development.

  • Fully diverse design and build, with 1+1 diverse routes alongside dual chassis and card configuration to meet customer requirements of 99.999% availability.

  • Each network component monitored by euNetworks Network Operation Centre (NOC), operating 24/7 carrier-class support and maintenance, managed to tightly controlled SLAs.

  • Support teams local to the customer with a rapid 4-hour ‘spares to site’ policy

  • Scalability built-in with additional services easily added without disruption, supported by pre-agreed pricing and rapid service delivery of under 30 days.

  • A bespoke MSA covering industry-specific compliance requirements.

Robust and Dependable

Layers of diversity and redundancy are built into the network design and hardware configuration. The network is proactively managed 24/7 by our NOC team, working to a bespoke SLA, and has been maintained at 100% availability since going live.

Optimised Performance

Our dense, meshed metro network delivers routes within specific distances and latencies the customer requires for optimal performance from its mainframe and applications.

Implementation and management of new hardware reduced the number of racks required by 90% compared to the previous design, reducing power consumption, lowering costs and improving efficiency.

A network that Just Works

A solution designed to manage the network’s unique complexities and requirements, wrapped with an experienced service layer that deals with everything from everyday network uptime and incident management to relationships with the customer’s technology vendors and internal teams.
